Sheriff Coppinger's statement regarding the death of George Floyd

Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger issued the following statement regarding the death of George Floyd:

“As Sheriff of Essex County and former Lynn Police Chief, I am both heartbroken and appalled by the horrific actions and inactions by the four Minneapolis police officers that resulted in the death of George Floyd. These four men brought shame upon law enforcement officers across this country, and while we shoulder the burden of this tragedy, we too demand action. We demand a justice system that is both equal and fair for all, and we demand it now.

We at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department are committed to the principles of Honesty, Integrity, and Respect. These are the words that drive our mission, words that reflect upon our service to our communities. Their meanings are part of a true Criminal Justice system and should be embraced by all.

We join in support with those that mourn the loss of Mr. Floyd and who want to affect change through peaceful and purposeful means.Together, we can do this in a way that honors the legacy of George Floyd and makes us stronger as both a county and as a country.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Floyd family in these trying times. May he Rest in Peace.”
