First all-women Community Service crew steps up to help at Statehouse

This one

The Essex County Sheriff's Department has been sending Community Service Work Crews to the Statehouse for over 20 years, but Tuesday was the first time we ever sent a crew of all women.

These women are in our Women in Transition program in Salisbury and they volunteered to head to Boston to weed, plant, and rake the flower beds of the Massachusetts Statehouse.

Sgt. Mike Krol runs our Statehouse work crew program and every day he brings a crew to Boston to help with everything from landscaping to moving furniture.

We thank him for his dedication to this program and the work he does to support Massachusetts residents.

Under correctional officer supervision, our volunteer work crews provide free services to municipal agencies and non-profit organizations. From painting a town hall to filling sand bags to prevent storm damage, pre-release inmates can be seen helping throughout Essex County. Approximately four crews with an average of six inmates per crew work on community projects daily. Another four or five crews work daily on highway clean-up.
