Workforce Training

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department knows that one of the main obstacles to a person finding success after incarceration is the ability to find a good-paying job. To help, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department offers a number of workforce training programs.

We also offer a work release program for employers to hire individuals at the our Lawrence Pre-Release Center. This program allows incarcerated persons to earn money that is held until their release so it can be used for things such as rent, a car, etc.  We transport the workers to and from the places of business. Many of those who have participated in this program stay on with their companies upon release.

Some of the key offerings include:

  • Print Shop (Graphic Arts): Hands-on printing and design training aligned with entry-level graphic arts employment..
  • Barbering Program: 1,000 hours of instruction culminating in state licensing eligibility.
  • ServSafe Certification: Training in food safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards..
  • Hardscaping: Masonry and landscaping skills including blueprint reading, concrete work, and community-based project experience.
  • Work Release: Enables select participants to gain paid job experience in the community while still in custody.
  • The TLE Center for Urban Entrepreneurship: A program for incarcerated men and women with the mission of empowering individuals to work in the beauty and hair care industry by providing career training and support. The organization helps people build sustainable careers and microbusinesses by offering structured programs that combine hands-on training, mentorship, and access to resources.
  • Plumbing Program: Tier 1 plumbing program equipped with 110 hours of instruction to cover basic plumbing, safety (including OSHA-30), piping methods, and introduction to the Massachusetts Uniform Plumbing Code. Program includes 1 year of wrap around post release support services.

Collaborations with UTEC and ROCA: Specialized career navigation, peer support, and educational services for 18–24-year-olds in Lawrence, Greater Lynn, and Boston.
