The Supporting Transitions and Reentry (STAR) program is designed to help justice-involved individuals living in the community avoid returning to patterns of old behavior and succeed in their communities by connecting them with essential programming, support, and services delivered in our two community-based offices.
The STAR team is a multidisciplinary group of navigators, clinicians, and educators. Our navigators are enhanced case managers, providing vital resource connections, advocacy, and support, able to connect with individuals before they leave custody to assist with reentry. Our Reentry staff lead daily groups addressing critical behavioral health needs like substance use recovery, trauma, self-esteem, anger management, and responsible thinking. Our educational team offers classes from early literacy through HiSET preparation and testing, and English language learning. Our advisor helps individuals create a personalized path for their education and career journey. This can include vocational training, job readiness, resume building, employment, career exploration, higher education, or digital literacy.
Referrals come from many sources: our ECSD facilities, specialty courts, diversion courts, probation, police, and community partner organizations. We also welcome referrals from current participants, family, and self-referrals. In addition to our team, we partner with over 200 community organizations for services ranging from mental health and substance use support to spiritual and recreational activities. We offer digital literacy and IT classes of all levels, and when available through our partners, vocational training like braiding and barbering, CDL training, construction, solar panel installation, and culinary arts.
STAR gives participants the tools they need to rebuild their lives and has quickly become a model program, earning recognition for its success in reducing repeat offenses and improving lives by addressing the root causes of crime.
