Community Work Crews & Anti-Graffiti Truck

Community Work Crews: Giving Back, One Project at a Time

Under correctional officer supervision, our work crews provide free services to municipal agencies and nonprofits across Essex County. Every day, four crews assist with community projects—from painting town halls to storm damage prevention—while another four to five crews focus on highway clean-ups. In 2024, a total of 1,234 crews worked throughout Essex County. This meant inmates from our pre-release facilities gave approximately 34,000 hours back to the community.

Fighting Graffiti, Restoring Communities

Our year-round Anti-Graffiti Unit helps keep Essex County clean by removing vandalism from public spaces. In 2020 alone, this dedicated team responded 102 times, providing over 1,224 hours of free service. Based at the Prerelease and Re-entry Center in Lawrence, the unit is operated by low-level offenders and supervised by a correctional officer—proving that rehabilitation and service can go hand in hand.
