The Essex County Sheriff’s Department Clinical Services Division oversees the delivery of clinical care to individuals in the department’s custody, with a core focus on medical, mental health, and psychiatric services.
With approximately 65% of ECSD inmates experiencing a mental health condition, mental health clinicians provide responsive, compassionate, and evidence-based care while balancing the demands of crisis intervention, initial and ongoing assessments, and the consistent support of the most vulnerable individuals.
The Essex County Sheriff’s Department partners with VitalCore Health Strategies to deliver a comprehensive medical program that includes health services administration, medical and nursing care, psychiatry, ophthalmology, dental services, physical therapy, laboratory and radiology services, and discharge planning. This collaboration is designed to provide community-level care to individuals while in custody, with a strong emphasis on the management and stabilization of chronic conditions.
