The Essex County Sheriff’s Department Civil Process Division delivers legal documents and enforces civil court orders throughout Essex County. Under Massachusetts law (MGL Ch. 37, Sec. 11 & 12), Sheriffs and their Deputies serve all legal documents in the county and are trained to handle both court and non-court papers with the same professionalism expected of all law enforcement officers.
The division carries out court-ordered actions including property seizures and sales, wage garnishments, and arrests. Staff and Deputies work to meet court deadlines, improve communication, and ensure accurate, timely service.
Operating as a public agency since 1997, the division employs uniformed and non-uniformed personnel at offices in Salem and Lawrence. Unlike private firms, it is committed to public service, accountability, and continually improving how civil process is delivered.
