HAVERHILL — The Essex County Sheriff’s Department proudly celebrated the graduation of Basic Training Academy Class 26-01, welcoming 26 new correctional officers who successfully completed the department’s intensive training program. The ceremony, held at Northern Essex Community College on April 10, 2026, and led by Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger, marked the official start of the graduates’ careers in corrections and public safety.

Over the past 13 weeks, members of Class 26-01 completed a rigorous Basic Training Academy curriculum at the ECSD training facility on the NECC campus. The academy immersed recruits in departmental procedures, mental and behavioral health awareness, de-escalation strategies, emergency medical response, defensive tactics, physical fitness, and hands-on scenario-based training using a mock housing unit and cells.

“These graduates have shown exceptional dedication, professionalism, and resilience,” said Sheriff Coppinger. “Class 26-01 has embraced one of the most challenging roles in public safety, and we are honored to welcome them as we continue strengthening correctional training across the Commonwealth.”

“This work requires strength, compassion, and the highest standard of integrity,” Sheriff Coppinger added. “This class has demonstrated those qualities throughout their training, and we are confident they will excel as they begin this important chapter of their careers.”
