Eight correctional officers also sworn-in as sergeants at Haverhill ceremony

HAVERHILL — The Essex County Sheriff’s Department celebrated the graduation of 19 new correctional officers during a ceremony held Friday, April 4, at Northern Essex Community College. Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger presided over the event, which also included the promotion of seven officers to the rank of sergeant and the recognition of 10 additional staff members for recent career advancements.

The 13-week Basic Training Academy, conducted at the department’s state-of-the-art facility on the NECC campus, prepared recruits with comprehensive instruction in departmental procedures, mental health awareness, de-escalation techniques, medical response, defensive driving, and physical fitness. Scenario-based exercises conducted in a mock housing unit and cells provided critical real-world training in preparation for careers in corrections.

“These graduates have completed a rigorous training program and demonstrated the professionalism, commitment, and readiness required to take on one of the most challenging roles in law enforcement,” said Sheriff Coppinger. “We are proud to welcome them to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and look forward to the impact they will make in our facilities and communities.”

Upon completing their first year of service, the new officers will be eligible to become sworn Deputy Sheriffs for Essex County.

“These graduates are stepping into a role that demands integrity, strength, and compassion,” said Sheriff Coppinger.

“They’ve proven they’re up to the challenge, and we’re proud to welcome them to the team.”
