The U.S. Dept. of Justice Conference brings together stakeholders in addressing the national opioid crisis and to assess the bureau’s opioid abuse program. The U.S. Bureau of Justice’s Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Site-based Program aims to reduce the opioid misuse and the number of overdose fatalities, and supports the implementation, enhancement and proactive use of prescription drug monitoring programs that supports clinical decision making in preventing the misuse and diversion of controlled substances.

Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger discussed the role of law enforcement, prosecutor diversion programs, drug courts, community based supervision, corrections programs and reentry programs to reduce recidivism.  He focused on the use of effective interventions such as collaborating with probation, parole, child welfare, health care providers and recovery support services.
