The Essex County Sheriff’s Department is now accepting applicants who are at least 21 years old with a High School diploma or a GED equivalent for Correctional Officer positions. 

The Sheriff’s Department currently has openings for qualified candidates. The starting salary for a Correctional Officer is between $63,962.26 and $68,042.27, with an excellent health care and benefits package.

Other requirements include:

  • US citizenship, dual US citizenship, or US Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status.
  • All applicants are subject to physical fitness test, extensive background investigation, interview process, psychological screening, drugs test.
  • Valid license to carry a firearm (Applicants may be in process of obtaining during hiring process but must have valid license to carry prior to graduating academy).
  • Medical clearance for Basic Training Academy.
  • ALL Employees, Vendors and Volunteers must be able to effectively communicate with staff, inmates, and the general public.
