The Essex County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit ensures public safety by providing a safe environment for staff and inmates and works collaboratively with the community and other law enforcement agencies. The Essex County Sheriff’s Department recognizes the unique role of canines in augmenting security. The two disciplines currently identified for the use of canines within the department are canine patrol (including tactical response) and narcotic detection. Certified K-9 units may be utilized for a variety of purposes including but not limited to building checks, fence checks, common area searches, inmate living area searches, narcotic searches, perimeter patrol, routine internal patrol, crowd control and mutual aid requests.
